    शुक्लाम्बरधरं विष्णुं शशिवर्णं चतुर्भुजम् । प्रसन्नवदनं ध्यायेत् सर्वविघ्नोपशान्तये ॥ १॥

    Dressed in white you are, Oh, all pervading one, And glowing with the color of the moon. With four arms, you are, the all-knowing one, I meditate on your ever-smiling face, And pray,” Remove all obstacles on my way”

    यस्य द्विरदवक्त्राद्याः पारिषद्याः परः शतम् । विघ्नं निघ्नन्ति सततं विष्वक्सेनं तमाश्रये ॥ २॥

    I take refuge in Lord Vishvaksena, who has two tusks and other features, and who continuously removes obstacles caused by various sources, such as the assembly of gods with two or more faces and others.

    व्यासं वसिष्ठनप्तारं शक्तेः पौत्रमकल्मषम् । पराशरात्मजं वन्दे शुकतातं तपोनिधिम् ॥ ३॥

    I bow before you Vyasa, The treasure house of penance, The great-grandson of Vasishta, The grandson of Shakthi, The son of Parasara, And the father of Shuka.

    व्यासाय विष्णुरूपाय व्यासरूपाय विष्णवे । नमो वै ब्रह्मनिधये वासिष्ठाय नमो नमः ॥ ४॥

    Bow I before, Vyasa who is Vishnu, Vishnu who is Vyasa, And again and again bow before, He, who is born, In the family of Vasishta.

    अविकाराय शुद्धाय नित्याय परमात्मने । सदैकरूपरूपाय विष्णवे सर्वजिष्णवे ॥ ५॥

    Bow I before Vishnu Who is pure, Who is not affected, Who is permanent, Who is the ultimate truth. And He who wins over, All the mortals in this world.

    यस्य स्मरणमात्रेण जन्मसंसारबन्धनात् । विमुच्यते नमस्तस्मै विष्णवे प्रभविष्णवे ॥ ६॥

    Bow I before Him, The all-powerful Vishnu, The mere thought of whom. Releases one forever, Of the ties of birth and life. Bow I before the all-powerful Vishnu.

    श्रीवैशम्पायन उवाच --- श्रुत्वा धर्मानशेषेण पावनानि च सर्वशः । युधिष्ठिरः शान्तनवं पुनरेवाभ्यभाषत ॥ ७॥

    Sri Vaisampayana said:- After hearing a lot, About Dharma that carries life, And of those methods great, That removes sins from one’s life, Forever and to cleanse, Yudhishtra asked again, Bheeshma, the abode of everlasting peace.

    युधिष्ठिर उवाच --- किमेकं दैवतं लोके किं वाप्येकं परायणम् । स्तुवन्तः कं कमर्चन्तः प्राप्नुयुर्मानवाः शुभम् ॥ ८॥

    Yudhishthira asked: Oh Grandpa, "Who is the one supreme deity in the world, and what is the one ultimate refuge for all beings? Who, when praised, brings auspiciousness to people?"

    को धर्मः सर्वधर्माणां भवतः परमो मतः । किं जपन्मुच्यते जन्तुर्जन्मसंसारबन्धनात् ॥ ९॥

    What is the ultimate duty of all duties, and what is considered as the highest virtue by you? Owing to the bondage of worldly existence, what can free a person?

  10. 10

    भीष्म उवाच --- जगत्प्रभुं देवदेवमनन्तं पुरुषोत्तमम् । स्तुवन् नामसहस्रेण पुरुषः सततोत्थितः ॥ १०॥

    Bheeshma Replied:- That Purusha with endless devotion, Who chants a thousand names, Of He who is the lord of the Universe, Of He who is the God of gods, Of He who is limitless, Would get free, From these bondages of life.

    तमेव चार्चयन्नित्यं भक्त्या पुरुषमव्ययम् । ध्यायन् स्तुवन् नमस्यंश्च यजमानस्तमेव च ॥ ११॥

    He who also worships and prays, Daily without break, That Purusha who does not change, That Vishnu who does not end or begin, That God who is the lord of all worlds,

    अनादिनिधनं विष्णुं सर्वलोकमहेश्वरम् । लोकाध्यक्षं स्तुवन्नित्यं सर्वदुःखातिगो भवेत् ॥ १२॥

    And Him, who presides over the universe, Would loose without fail, All the miseries in this life.

  13. 13

    ब्रह्मण्यं सर्वधर्मज्ञं लोकानां कीर्तिवर्धनम् । लोकनाथं महद्भूतं सर्वभूतभवोद्भवम् ॥ १३॥

    Chanting the praises, Worshipping and singing, With devotion great, Of the lotus-eyed one, Who is partial to the Vedas, Who is the only one, who knows the dharma, Who increases the fame, Of those who live in this world

    एष मे सर्वधर्माणां धर्मोऽधिकतमो मतः । यद्भक्त्या पुण्डरीकाक्षं स्तवैरर्चेन्नरः सदा ॥ १४॥

    Who is the master of the universe, Who is the truth among all those who have life, And who decides the life of all living, Is the dharma that is great.

  15. 15

    परमं यो महत्तेजः परमं यो महत्तपः । परमं यो महद्ब्रह्म परमं यः परायणम् ॥ १५॥

    He who is the supreme effulgence, he who is the supreme austerity, he who is the supreme Brahman, he who is the supreme refuge.

  16. 16

    पवित्राणां पवित्रं यो मङ्गलानां च मङ्गलम् । दैवतं दैवतानां च भूतानां योऽव्ययः पिता ॥ १६॥

    Please hear from me, The thousand holy names, Which wash away all sins, Of Him who is purest of the pure, Of That which is holiest of holies, Of Him who is God among Gods, Of That father who lives Without death, Among all that lives in this world,

    यतः सर्वाणि भूतानि भवन्त्यादियुगागमे । यस्मिंश्च प्रलयं यान्ति पुनरेव युगक्षये ॥ १७॥

    Of Him whom all the souls, Were born at the start of the world, Of Him in whom, all that lives, Will disappear at the end of the world,

    तस्य लोकप्रधानस्य जगन्नाथस्य भूपते । विष्णोर्नामसहस्रं मे श‍ृणु पापभयापहम् ॥ १८॥

    And of that the chief of all this world, Who bears the burden of this world. I would teach you without fail, Of those names with fame. Which deal of His qualities great, And which the sages sing, So that beings of this wide world, Become happy and great.

    यानि नामानि गौणानि विख्यातानि महात्मनः । ऋषिभिः परिगीतानि तानि वक्ष्यामि भूतये ॥ १९॥

    I shall now recite to you those supplementary and well-known names of the great-souled Lord, which have been sung by the sages for the welfare of all beings.

    ऋषिर्नाम्नां सहस्रस्य वेदव्यासो महामुनिः ॥ छन्दोऽनुष्टुप् तथा देवो भगवान् देवकीसुतः ॥ २०॥

    These thousand names Yudishtra Are Sung for peace, And has Vyasa as the sage, And is composed in Anusthup meter, And has its God the son of Devaki,

    अमृतांशूद्भवो बीजं शक्तिर्देवकिनन्दनः । त्रिसामा हृदयं तस्य शान्त्यर्थे विनियोज्यते ॥ २१॥

    The seed of the sun, born from the ocean of nectar, is the energy of the delighter of Devaki (Krishna). It is placed in the heart for the purpose of tranquility through the Tri-Sama (Rigveda chant).

    विष्णुं जिष्णुं महाविष्णुं प्रभविष्णुं महेश्वरम् ॥ अनेकरूप दैत्यान्तं नमामि पुरुषोत्तमम् ॥ २२ ॥

    Bow I before Him, Who is everywhere, Who is ever victorious, Who is in every being, Who is God of Gods, Who is the killer of asuras, And who is the greatest, Among all purushas.

    श्रीवेदव्यास उवाच --- ॐ अस्य श्रीविष्णोर्दिव्यसहस्रनामस्तोत्रमहामन्त्रस्य । श्री वेदव्यासो भगवान् ऋषिः । अनुष्टुप् छन्दः । श्रीमहाविष्णुः परमात्मा श्रीमन्नारायणो देवता । अमृतांशूद्भवो भानुरिति बीजम् । देवकीनन्दनः स्रष्टेति शक्तिः । उद्भवः क्षोभणो देव इति परमो मन्त्रः । शङ्खभृन्नन्दकी चक्रीति कीलकम् । शार्ङ्गधन्वा गदाधर इत्यस्त्रम् । रथाङ्गपाणिरक्षोभ्य इति नेत्रम् । त्रिसामा सामगः सामेति कवचम् । आनन्दं परब्रह्मेति योनिः । ऋतुः सुदर्शनः काल इति दिग्बन्धः ॥

    Sri Veda Vyasa has beautifully described the attributes of this Divine Thousand Names of Lord Vishnu. It is a sacred mantra with profound significance, and Vyasa is the sage who revealed it. The meter is Anushtubh, Lord Mahavishnu is the supreme deity, and the seed (Bija) is 'Amritamshudbhavo Bhanuh.' The power (Shakti) is 'Devakinandana Srashteti.' The main mantra (Paramo Mantrah) is 'Udbhavah Kshobhanodeva.' The pin (Kilaka) is 'Shankhabhrinnandakicakreeti.' The weapon (Astra) is 'Sharngadhanvagadadhara ityastram.' The eye (Netram) is 'Rathangapanirakshobhy iti.' The armor (Kavacham) is 'Trisamasaamagah Same iti.' The origin (Yonih) is 'Anandam Parabrahmeti.' The season (Ritu) is 'Sudarshanah Kaalah iti.' The directional bond (Digbandha) is 'Dhanurdharah Sarngi Gadadharah iti.' These details add depth and significance to the chanting of this powerful mantra.

    अथ न्यासः । ॐ शिरसि वेदव्यासऋषये नमः । मुखे अनुष्टुप्छन्दसे नमः । हृदि श्रीकृष्णपरमात्मदेवतायै नमः । गुह्ये अमृतांशूद्भवो भानुरिति बीजाय नमः । पादयोर्देवकीनन्दनः स्रष्टेति शक्तये नमः । सर्वाङ्गे शङ्खभृन्नन्दकी चक्रीति कीलकाय नमः । करसम्पूटे मम श्रीकृष्णप्रीत्यर्थे जपे विनियोगाय नमः ॥

    Now, the Nyasa: "Om. I salute Vyasa, the sage, on the head. In the mouth, I salute the Anushtubh meter. In the heart, I salute the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna. In the secret part, I salute the seed mantra, 'Amritamshudbhavo Bhanuh.' On the feet, I salute the power, 'Devakinandana Srashteti.' On all limbs, I salute the pin (Kilaka), 'Shankhabhrinnandakicakreeti.' On the palms, for my own pleasure in chanting, I offer salutations.

    अथ करन्यासः । ॐ विश्वं विष्णुर्वषट्कार इत्यङ्गुष्ठाभ्यां नमः । अमृतांशूद्भवो भानुरिति तर्जनीभ्यां नमः । ब्रह्मण्यो ब्रह्मकृद्ब्रह्मेति मध्यमाभ्यां नमः । सुवर्णबिन्दुरक्षोभ्य इत्यनामिकाभ्यां नमः । निमिषोऽनिमिषः स्रग्वीति कनिष्ठिकाभ्यां नमः । रथाङ्गपाणिरक्षोभ्य इति करतलकरपृष्ठाभ्यां नमः । इति करन्यासः ।

    Now, the Karanyasa: "Om. Vishvam Vishnuvashatkara" - Salutations with the thumb (Angushthabhyam). "Amritamshudbhavo Bhanuriti" - Salutations with the index finger (Tarjaniibhyam). "Brahmanyo Brahmakrid Brahmeti" - Salutations with the middle finger (Madhyamabhyam). "Suvarnabindurakshobhy Iti" - Salutations with the ring finger (Anamikabhyam). "Nimisho'Nimishah Sragvi" - Salutations with the little finger (Kanishthikabhyam). "Rathangapanirakshobhy Iti" - Salutations to the back of the hand (Karatalakaraprishtabhyam).

    अथ षडङ्गन्यासः । ॐ विश्वं विष्णुर्वषट्कार इति हृदयाय नमः । अमृतांशूद्भवो भानुरिति शिरसे स्वाहा । ब्रह्मण्यो ब्रह्मकृद्ब्रह्मेति शिखायै वषट् । सुवर्णबिन्दुरक्षोभ्य इति कवचाय हुम् । निमिषोऽनिमिषः स्रग्वीति नेत्रत्रयाय वौषट् । रथाङ्गपाणिरक्षोभ्य इत्यस्त्राय फट् । इति षडङ्गन्यासः ॥

    Now, the Shadanga Nyasa: "Om. Vishvam Vishnuvashatkara" - Salutations to the heart (Hridayaya Namah). "Amritamshudbhavo Bhanuriti" - Offering to the head (Shirase Swaha). "Brahmanyo Brahmakrid Brahmeti" - Offering to the tuft of hair (Shikhaayai Vashat). "Suvarnabindurakshobhy Iti" - Offering to the armor (Kavachaay Hum). "Nimisho'Nimishah Sragvi" - Offering to the three eyes (Netratrayaaya Voushat). "Rathangapanirakshobhy Iti" - Offering to the back of the hands (Astraya Phat).

    श्रीकृष्णप्रीत्यर्थे विष्णोर्दिव्यसहस्रनामजपमहं करिष्ये इति सङ्कल्पः ।

    I resolve to recite the divine thousand names of Lord Vishnu, the Vishnu Sahasranama, for the sake of pleasing Lord Sri Krishna.

    अथ ध्यानम् । क्षीरोदन्वत्प्रदेशे शुचिमणिविलसत्सैकतेर्मौक्तिकानां मालाकॢप्तासनस्थः स्फटिकमणिनिभैर्मौक्तिकैर्मण्डिताङ्गः । शुभ्रैरभ्रैरदभ्रैरुपरिविरचितैर्मुक्तपीयूष वर्षैः आनन्दी नः पुनीयादरिनलिनगदा शङ्खपाणिर्मुकुन्दः ॥ १॥

    Let that Mukunda makes us all holy, Who wears all over his body Pearls made of spatika, Who sits on the throne of a garland of pearls, Located in the sand of precious stones, By the side of the sea of milk, Who gets happy of the white cloud, Sprayed of drops of nectar, And who has the mace, the wheel and the lotus in His hands.

    भूः पादौ यस्य नाभिर्वियदसुरनिलश्चन्द्र सूर्यौ च नेत्रे कर्णावाशाः शिरो द्यौर्मुखमपि दहनो यस्य वास्तेयमब्धिः । अन्तःस्थं यस्य विश्वं सुरनरखगगोभोगिगन्धर्वदैत्यैः चित्रं रंरम्यते तं त्रिभुवन वपुषं विष्णुमीशं नमामि ॥ २॥

    I bow before that God, Vishnu Who is the lord of three worlds, Who has earth as his feet, Who has air as his soul, Who has the sky as his belly, Who has moon and sun as eyes, Who has the four directions as ears, Who has the land of gods as head, Who has fire as his mouth, Who has the sea as his stomach, And in whose belly play and enjoy, Gods, men birds, animals, Serpent men, Gandharvas, and Asuras.

    ॐ शान्ताकारं भुजगशयनं पद्मनाभं सुरेशं विश्वाधारं गगनसदृशं मेघवर्णं शुभाङ्गम् । लक्ष्मीकान्तं कमलनयनं योगिभिर्ध्यानगम्यं वन्दे विष्णुं भवभयहरं सर्वलोकैकनाथम् ॥ ३॥

    I bow before the God Vishnu, Who is the personification of peace, Who sleeps on his folded arms, Who has a lotus on his belly, Who is the God of gods, Who is the basis of earth, Who is similar to the sky, Who is of the color of the cloud, Who has beautiful limbs, Who is the consort of Lakshmi, Who has lotus like eyes, Who is seen by saints through thought, Who kills all worries and fears, And who is the lord of all the worlds.

    मेघश्यामं पीतकौशेयवासं श्रीवत्साङ्कं कौस्तुभोद्भासिताङ्गम् । पुण्योपेतं पुण्डरीकायताक्षं विष्णुं वन्दे सर्वलोकैकनाथम् ॥ ४॥

    I bow before that God Vishnu, Who is the lord of all the universe, Who is black like a cloud, Who wears yellow silks, Who has the sreevatsa on him, Whose limbs shine because of Kousthubha, Who has eyes like an open lotus, And who is surrounded by the blessed always.

  32. 32

    नमः समस्तभूतानामादिभूताय भूभृते । अनेकरूपरूपाय विष्णवे प्रभविष्णवे ॥ ५॥

    I bow before that God Vishnu, Who is the lord of all the universe, Who is black like a cloud, Who wears yellow silks, Who has the sreevatsa on him, Whose limbs shine because of Kousthubha, Who has eyes like an open lotus, And who is surrounded by the blessed always.

    सशङ्खचक्रं सकिरीटकुण्डलं सपीतवस्त्रं सरसीरुहेक्षणम् । सहारवक्षःस्थलकौस्तुभश्रियं नमामि विष्णुं शिरसा चतुर्भुजम् ॥ ६॥

    I bow before the God Vishnu, Who has four arms, Who has a conch and wheel in his hands, Who wears a crown and ear globes, Who wears yellow silks, Who has lotus-like eyes, Who shines because of Kousthbha, Worn in his garlanded chest.

    छायायां पारिजातस्य हेमसिंहासनोपरि आसीनमम्बुदश्याममायताक्षमलंकृतम् । चन्द्राननं चतुर्बाहुं श्रीवत्साङ्कित वक्षसं रुक्मिणी सत्यभामाभ्यां सहितं कृष्णमाश्रये ॥ ७॥

    I seek refuge in Lord Krishna, Who is with Rukhmani and Satyabhama, Who sits on a golden throne, In the shade of Parijata tree, Who is of the color of the black cloud, Who has long broad eyes, Who has a face like a moon, Who has four hands, And who has a chest adorned by Sreevatsa.

    स्तोत्रम् । हरिः ॐ । विश्वं विष्णुर्वषट्कारो भूतभव्यभवत्प्रभुः । भूतकृद्भूतभृद्भावो भूतात्मा भूतभावनः ॥ १॥

    1. Vishvam: He who is the Universe, reason for Universe, the entire being. 2. Vishnu: He who isAll Pervading, Omnipresent, Remover of darkness. 3. Vashatkara: One who controls and directs. 4. Bhuta-Bhavya-Bhavat-Prabhu: Lord of past, present, and the future. 5. Bhuta-Krit: Creator of all beings. 6. Bhuta-Bhrt: The sustainer of all beings. 7. Bhavah: He who exists with all the splendor and independent of anything else. 8. Bhutatma: The Atma or soul of all beings. 9. Bhuta-bhavanah: One who nourishes and nurtures all beings.

    पूतात्मा परमात्मा च मुक्तानां परमा गतिः । अव्ययः पुरुषः साक्षी क्षेत्रज्ञोऽक्षर एव च ॥ २॥

    10. Putatma: One who has a pure Atma. 11. Paramatma: The Supreme Soul. 12. Muktanam Parama Gatih: One who is the ultimate goal for all Souls. 13. Avyayah: He who is Indestructible and who gives moksha. 14. Purushah: One who existed before anything else, one who completes existence. 15. Sakshi: One who directly witnesses everything. 16. Kshetrajnah: One who can direct to the place to reach supreme bliss. 17. Akshara: One whose greatness never diminishes.

    योगो योगविदां नेता प्रधानपुरुषेश्वरः । नारसिंहवपुः श्रीमान् केशवः पुरुषोत्तमः ॥ ३॥

    18. Yogah: One who alone is the definite and unobstructed means to salvation. 19. Yogavitam neta: One who leads those who practice yoga until they reach their Goal. 20. Pradhana Purusha Isvarah: One who is the Lord of Primordial Matter as well as the Jivas. 21. Narasimha Vapuh: One who possesses a body of man and lion combined. 22. Sriman: One with a lovely form. 23. Kesavah: One with lovely locks of hair. 24. Purushottamah: The Supreme amongst the Purushas.

    सर्वः शर्वः शिवः स्थाणुर्भूतादिर्निधिरव्ययः । सम्भवो भावनो भर्ता प्रभवः प्रभुरीश्वरः ॥ ४॥

    25. Sarvah: One who is all. 26. Sharvah: The Remover of all sins. 27. Shivah: One who confers auspiciousness. 28. Sthanuh: One who gives blessing to the devotees. 29. Bhutadih: Source of the Pancha Bhoota. 30. Nidhiravyayah: One who is the never-ending treasure. 31. Sambhavah: One who manifests in any form to those who sincerely seek Him. 32. Bhavanah: One who regenerates all. 33. Bharta: One who supports all. 34. Prabhavah: One whose birth is of a sublime nature. 35. Prabhuh: who is all-powerful. 36. Isvarah: One who has the supreme power of control.

    स्वयम्भूः शम्भुरादित्यः पुष्कराक्षो महास्वनः । अनादिनिधनो धाता विधाता धातुरुत्तमः ॥ ५॥

    37. Svayambhuh: He who manifests Himself by His own free will. 38. Shambhuh: One who causes happiness to everyone by the beauty of His appearance 39. Adityah: One who is the Adityas. 40. Pushkarakshah: The Lotus-eyed. 41. Maha-Svanah: He of the venerable sound. 42. Anadi-Nidhanah: One who is without beginning or end. 43. Dhata: The creator. 44. Vidhata: The producer. 45. Dhaturuttamah: One who is the best.

    अप्रमेयो हृषीकेशः पद्मनाभोऽमरप्रभुः । विश्वकर्मा मनुस्त्वष्टा स्थविष्ठः स्थविरो ध्रुवः ॥ ६॥

    46. Aprameyah: One who cannot be defined but who can only be experienced. 47. Hrshikesah: Controller of the sense-organs. 48. Padma-Nabhah: One from whose navel the universe emanates. 49. Amara-Prabhuh: The Lord of the immortal gods. 50. Visva Karma: The Creator of the Universe. 51. Manuh: The Great Thinker. 52. Tvashta: One who created all the different forms and names in this Universe. 53. Sthavishthah: One who is huge in size. 54. Sthavirah: One who has always existed. 55. Dhruvah: One who is unaffected by Time, Unchanging, Permanent.

    अग्राह्यः शाश्वतः कृष्णो लोहिताक्षः प्रतर्दनः । प्रभूतस्त्रिककुब्धाम पवित्रं मङ्गलं परम् ॥ ७॥

    56. Agrahyah: One who is beyond understanding. 57. Shashvatah: One who is eternal. 58. Krshnah: One who has a dark-blue complexion and all attractive. 59. Lohitakshah: One with eyes red like the beautiful lotus flower. 60. Pradrdanah: The Destroyer. 61. Prabhutah: One who is endowed with wisdom and greatness 62. Tri-kakud-dhama: Master of three worlds. 63. Pavitram: Purity Incarnate. 64. Mangalam Param: The Embodiment of Supreme Auspiciousness.

    ईशानः प्राणदः प्राणो ज्येष्ठः श्रेष्ठः प्रजापतिः । हिरण्यगर्भो भूगर्भो माधवो मधुसूदनः ॥ ८॥

    65. Isanah: The controller. 66. Pranadah: Giver of life. 67. Pranah: Lifeforce. 68. Jyeshthah: Oldest. 69. Sreshthah: Most praise-worthy. 70. Prajapatih: Lord of mankind. 71. Hiranyagarbah: He who resides in a lovely Abode. 72. Bhugarbhah: Protection of the Earth. 73. Madhavah: who is born in the race of a Yadhava called Madhu, and for whom there is no Lord. 74. Madhusudhanah: The slayer of the evil demon called Madhu.

    ईश्वरो विक्रमी धन्वी मेधावी विक्रमः क्रमः । अनुत्तमो दुराधर्षः कृतज्ञः कृतिरात्मवान् ॥ ९॥

    75. Isvarah: The God. 76. Vikram: The most courageous and powerful. 77. Dhanvi: The wielder of the bow. 78. Medhavi: One who has a good memory. 79. Vikramah: One with great strides such as in the Vamana incarnation. 80. Kramah: One who is the basis for the order in the Universe. 81. Anuttamah: One for whom there is nothing superior or better. 82. Duradharshah: One who cannot be overcome by others. 83. Krtajnah: One who is grateful. 84. Krtih: One who leads to good deeds. 85. Pratyayah: One who can be relied upon. 95. Sarvadarsanah: One who shows his grace to all.

    96. Ajah: Unborn and the Remover of all obstacles. 97. Sarvesvarah: One who is the isvara for all isvaras. 98. Siddhah: One who is reachable and knowledgeable. 99. Siddhih: The Goal. 100. Sarvadih: The Origin or Cause of all things. 101. Acyutah: One who undergoes no changes like birth, decay, etc. 102. Vrishakapih: One who lifted the Earth in the form of Varaaha. 103. Ameyatma: One whose nature cannot be comprehended. 104. Aarva yoga vinissritah: One who is beyond any attachment.

    वसुर्वसुमनाः सत्यः समात्माऽसम्मितः समः । अमोघः पुण्डरीकाक्षो वृषकर्मा वृषाकृतिः ॥ १२॥

    105. Vasuh: One who dwells in the hearts of His devotees. 106. Vasumanah: One who has a good mind. 107. Satyah: The Truth. 108. Samatma: One who has a balanced mind. 109. Sammitah: The One Truth who is accepted by the Risihis and revealed in the Upanishads. 110. Samah: One who treats all His devotees equally. 111. Amoghah: One who always gives fruits to those who worship him. 112. Pundarikakshah: One whose eyes are beautiful like the lotus flower. 113. Vrishakarma: One who is of righteous actions. 114. Vrishakriti: One who is an embodiment of dharma.

    रुद्रो बहुशिरा बभ्रुर्विश्वयोनिः शुचिश्रवाः । अमृतः शाश्वतस्थाणुर्वरारोहो महातपाः ॥ १३॥

    115. Rudrah: One who destroys misery. 116. Bahu-sirah: One who is multi-headed. 117. Babhruh: The Supporter. 118. Visva-yonih: The cause of this world. 119. Suci-sravah: One who listens to words that are pure. 120. Amritah: One who is nectar to His devotees. 121. Sasvata-sthanuh: One who is Eternally Firm. 122. Vararohah: One who is the most supreme object of attainment. 123. Maha-tapah: One who is endowed with great knowledge.

Siddha-sankalpah: One whose wishes are always fulfilled. 255. Siddhi-dah: The bestower of siddhi-s or super-human powers. 256. Siddhi-sadhanah: One who makes the means for siddhi pleasant.

    वृषाही वृषभो विष्णुर्वृषपर्वा वृषोदरः । वर्धनो वर्धमानश्च विविक्तः श्रुतिसागरः ॥ २८॥

    266. Su-bhujah: One with majestic arms. 267. Dur-dharah: One who is difficult to comprehend 268. Vagmi: He who has words that are praise-worthy. 269. Mahendrah: The God of Indra and other gods. 270. Vasu-dah: The Giver of wealth. 271. Vasuh: He who is Himself the wealth sought by those who have realized the Truth. 272.     276. Ojas-tejo-dyuti-dharah: One who is endowed with strength, vigor and brilliance. 277. Prakasatma: He of a nature that is well-known to all. 278. Pratapanah: He who destroys his enemies. 279. Rddhah: He who is full in all respects. 280. Spashya-taksharah: He of clear words. 281. Mantrah: One who represents the mantras. 282. Candra-amsuh: He who is possessed of the effulgent rays like those of the moon. 283. Bhaskara-dyutih: He who has the effulgence of the sun.

    अमृतांशूद्भवो भानुः शशबिन्दुः सुरेश्वरः । औषधं जगतः सेतुः सत्यधर्मपराक्रमः ॥ ३१॥

Ananta-jit: One whose victory is endless.

Dur-jayah: He Who is Invincible. 782. Dur-atikramah: He Who cannot be bypassed by those who seek relief from samsaraw 785. Dur-gah: He Whose realization is constrained by our own limitations. 786. Dur-avasah: He whose place of residence (Sri vaikunTham) is not easy to attain. 787. Durari-ha: The Dispeller of the evil-minded enemies.

    शुभाङ्गो लोकसारङ्गः सुतन्तुस्तन्तुवर्धनः । इन्द्रकर्मा महाकर्मा कृतकर्मा कृतागमः ॥ ८४॥

    788. Subha’ngah: He with an auspicious form that is meditated upon by His true devotees. 789. Loka-sara’ngah: He Who is reachable through the essence (sara) of the vedas, namely pranava. And is the object of devotion (loka-sara). 790. Su-tantuh: He Who has expanded this Universe starting from Himself. 791. Tantu-vardhanah: He Who augments the expansion of Himself into this world by protecting it. 792. Indra-karma: He Who is responsible for the powers of indra. 793. Maha-karma: He of magnanimous actions. 794. Krta-karma: One Who has achieved all there is to achieve. 795. Krtagamah: The Propounder of spiritual texts.

Sarva-vag-isvara-isvarah: The Lord of all who has mastery over all words. 809. Maha-hradah: He Who has created the great oceans so that the Earth does not become completely dry and perish. 810. Maha-gartah: The Great Charioteer of Mahabharata fame. 811. Maha-bhutah: He Who considers great men as His own. 812. Maha-nidhih: He Who has the great treasure in the form of His devotees.

    813. Kumudah: He Who is on this Earth with delight by enjoying the association with His devotees. 814. Kundarah: The Bestower of the knowledge of the Supreme Reality. 815. Kundah: He Who cleanses the sins of His devotees. 816. Parjanyah: He Who bestows His blessings on the devotees like the rain cloud. 817. Pavanah: He Who is the form of the wind. 818.     830. Sahasrarcih: The Thousand-rayed who illumines everything in this Universe. 831. Sapta-jihvah: The seven-tongued. 832. Saptaidhah: One Who is kindled in the form of fire by the seven kinds of offerings. 833. Sapta-vahanah: He Who has seven vehicles in the form of the seven Vedic mantra-s represented by the seven horses of the Sun: 834. A-murtih: He Who does not have a body that is affected by karma. 835. An-aghah: He Who is of blemishless character. 836. A-cintyah: He Who cannot be completely comprehended in our minds. 837. Bhya-krt: He Who causes fear. 838. Bhaya-nasanah: He Who destroys fear.

Krsah: He Who is lighter than the light and is thinner than anything thin. 842. Sthulah: He Who is immense. 843. Guna-bhrt: He Who supports the three guNa-s of sattva, rajas, and tamas. 844. Nir-gunah: He Who is bereft of the common qualities and has special flavours. 845. Mahan: He Who is supreme in everything. 846. A-dhrtah: The Unconstrained. 847. Sva-dhrtah: He Who is Self-sustained and superior. 848. Svasyah: He Who has a glorious status and is superior over the mukta-s. 849. Prag-vamsah: He Who is the cause of the eternally free souls. 850. Vamsa-vardhanah: He Who keeps His progeny growing.

    851. Bhara-bhrt: He Who shoulders the burden. 852. Kathitah: He Whose greatness is extolled by all the Vedas, Puranas, etc. 853. Yogi: He Who is endowed with super-human powers. 854. Yogisah: He Who is the foremost Lord of all yogins. 855. Sarva-kama-dah: He Who bestows all desires. 856. Asramah: He Who provides an abode of rest for the seekers. 857. Sramanah: He Who makes it possible to continue the effort of uncompleted yoga in the next birth. 858. Ksamah: He Who alone is left behind at the time of pralaya. 859.     861. Dhanur-dharah: The wielder of the bow. 862. Dhanur-vedah: The Propounder of the science of archery. 863. Dandah: He Who is verily the weapon (power) of Yama – the danda. 864. Damayita: The Subduer of the enemies of His devotees. 865. A-damah: He Who is not subdued by anyone. 866. A-parajitah: He Who is invincible. 867. Sarva-sahah: The Supporter of all the other deities. 868. Niyanta: He Who directs. 869. Niyamah: He Who controls. 870. Yamah: He Who is beyond yama or mrityu.

Satyah: One Who is well-disposed towards pious souls. 874. Satya-dharma-parayanah: He Who is pleased with the true dharma practiced by His devotees. 875. Abhiprayah: He Who is the object of choice. 876. Priyarhah: He Who is rightly the object of love. 877. Arhah: The greatest Lord to be worshipped. 878.     880. Vihayasa-gatih: He Who is the means for the attainment of paramapadam. 881. Jyotih: The Light that leads to Sri Vaikuntham and is self-luminous. 882. Su-rucih: He of lovely effulgence. 883. Huta-bhug-vibhuh: He that is the Bright Fortnight of the Moon. 884. Ravih: The Sun with his brilliance. 885. Virocanah: He of various splendors – such as the Sun, moon, day, night, etc. 886. Suryah: One who generates Sri or brilliance in Surya or Agni. 887. Savita: He Who produces or brings life in the form of the Sun. 888. Ravi-locanah: He Who illuminates.

    915. A-krurah: He Who was not cruel. 916. Pesalah: He Who is charming and soft. 917. Dakshath: He Who removes evil elements very quickly. 918. Dakshinah: He Who is pleasing and amiable. 919. Kshaminam-varah: The foremost in bearing the burden of protection of His devotees. 920. Vidvat-tamah: The Best among those who know what to do. 921. Vita-bhayah: He because of Whom fear is dispelled. 922. Punya-sravana-kIrtanah: He Whose nama sravanam and kirtanam are purifying.

    932. Ananta-rupah: He of infinite Forms. 933. Ananta-srih: He of infinite wealth, glory, power, etc. 934. Jita-manyuh: He Who has conquered His anger. 935. Bayapahah: He Who destroys the fear in the mind of the devotee. 936. Chatur-asrah: One Who is skilled in all aspects. 937. Gabhiratma: He of deep and profound nature. 938. Vidisah: One Who can be reached from all directions. 939. Vyadisah: He Who appoints the different gods in their respective positions. 940. Disah: He Who commands.

    अनादिर्भूर्भुवो लक्ष्मीः सुवीरो रुचिराङ्गदः । जननो जनजन्मादिर्भीमो भीमपराक्रमः ॥ १०१॥

    941. Anadih: He Who is not realized by many because of their ignorance. 942. Bhur-bhuvah: He Who supports that which supports the Earth, the sky, etc 943. Lakshmih: The Wealth. 944. Suviro: Good fighter. 945. Rucira’ngadah: He Who bestows His lovely form for His devotees to enjoy. 946. Jananah: The Creator. 947. Jana-janmadih: He Who is the root cause of all beings. 948. Bhimah: He Who is frightful to those who do not follow dharma. 949. Bhima-parakramya: one who is the all-powerful fighter.

    आधारनिलयोऽधाता पुष्पहासः प्रजागरः । ऊर्ध्वगः सत्पथाचारः प्राणदः प्रणवः पणः ॥ १०२॥

    950. Aadhaaranilayah: One who is the fundamental sustainer. 951. Adhaataa: Above whom there is no other to control or to command. 952. Pushpahaasah: He who shines like an opening flower. 953. Prajaagarah: Ever-Awaked -He who knows no sleep. 954. Oordhvagah: One who walks the path of truth. 955. Satpaatacharah: One who walks the path of truth. 956.     967. Bhoor-bhuvas-svas-taruh: One who nurtures the three lokas. 968. Tarrah: One who helps all to cross –over. 969. Savitaa: He who is the eternal father of the entire Universe. 970. Pra-pitaamahah: He who is the father of even the Father of all Beings. 971. Yajnah: One whose very nature is yajna. 972. Yajna-patih: The lord of all yajnas. 973. Yajvaa: The one who performs Yajna according to the strict prescriptions laid down in Vedas. 974. Yajnaangah: One whose limbs are employed in Yajna. 975. Yajna-vaahanah: One who fulfills Yajnas.

    यज्ञभृद् यज्ञकृद् यज्ञी यज्ञभुग् यज्ञसाधनः । यज्ञान्तकृद् यज्ञगुह्यमन्नमन्नाद एव च ॥ १०५॥

    976. Yajna-bhrit: the ruler of the Yajnas. 977. Yajna-Krit: One who performs Yajna 978. Yajnee: One who is a constant ‘Enjoyer’ of the perpetual Yajnas. 979. Yajnee: All that is offered into the sacred Fire during a Yajna. 980. Yajna-saadhanah: One who fulfills all Yajnas. 981. Yajnaantakrit: One who performs the last act in all Yajnas. 982. yagna-guhyam: One who is the most profound truth to be realized in all yajnas. 983. Annam: One who has himself become the food. 984. Annaadah: One who eats the food.

    आत्मयोनिः स्वयञ्जातो वैखानः सामगायनः । देवकीनन्दनः स्रष्टा क्षितीशः पापनाशनः ॥ १०६॥

    985. Aatma-yohin: One who is himself the material cause. 986. Svayam-jaatah: One who is the lord of the universe. 987. Vai-Khaanah: The one who dug through the earth. 988. saama-gaayanah: One who signs the Saama-songs. 989. Devakeenandhanah: He who was born to Devakee in his Incarnation as Krishna. 990. Srashtaa: One who creates. 991. Kshiteesah: One who is the lord of the earth. 992. Paapa-naasanah: meditating upon whom, all vaasanaas are liquidated.

    शङ्खभृन्नन्दकी चक्री शार्ङ्गधन्वा गदाधरः । रथाङ्गपाणिरक्षोभ्यः सर्वप्रहरणायुधः ॥ १०७॥

    993. Samkha-bhrit: One who has the divine conch named Paanchajanya. 994. Nandakee: The lord’s sword is called Nandaka. 995. Chakree: one who carries the discus called Sudarsana. 996. Saarnga-dhanvaa: One who aims his unerring bow called Saarnga. 997. Gadda-dharah: One who holds his divine club (Mace) celebrated as Kaumodakee. 998. Rathanga-paanih: One who has the wheel of the chariot as his weapon. 999. Akshobhyah: One who cannot be exasperated by anyone. 1000. Sarva-praharanaayudhah: He who has all implements for all kinds of assault and fight.

    सर्वप्रहरणायुध ॐ नम इति । वनमाली गदी शार्ङ्गी शङ्खी चक्री च नन्दकी । श्रीमान् नारायणो विष्णुर्वासुदेवोऽभिरक्षतु ॥ १०८॥

    He who uses everything as a weapon Om. Protect us Oh Lord Narayana Who wears the forest garland, Who has the mace, conch, sword, and the wheel. And who is called Vishnu and the Vasudeva.

    उत्तरन्यासः । भीष्म उवाच --- इतीदं कीर्तनीयस्य केशवस्य महात्मनः । नाम्नां सहस्रं दिव्यानामशेषेण प्रकीर्तितम् ॥ १॥

    Bhishma said: This divine and glorious thousand-fold names of Lord Keshava should be recited with great devotion, and they have been expounded in their entirety.

    य इदं श‍ृणुयान्नित्यं यश्चापि परिकीर्तयेत् । नाशुभं प्राप्नुयात्किञ्चित्सोऽमुत्रेह च मानवः ॥ २॥

    He who hears or sings, It all without fail, In all days of the year, Will never get into bad, In this life and after.

    वेदान्तगो ब्राह्मणः स्यात्क्षत्रियो विजयी भवेत् । वैश्यो धनसमृद्धः स्याच्छूद्रः सुखमवाप्नुयात् ॥ ३॥

    The Brahmin will get knowledge, The Kshatriya will get victory, The vaisya will get wealth, and The shudra will get pleasures, By reading these.

    धर्मार्थी प्राप्नुयाद्धर्ममर्थार्थी चार्थमाप्नुयात् । कामानवाप्नुयात्कामी प्रजार्थी प्राप्नुयात्प्रजाम् ॥ ४॥

    He who seeks Dharma, He who seeks wealth, He who seeks pleasures, 36 He who seeks children, Will all without fail, Get what they want.

    भक्तिमान् यः सदोत्थाय शुचिस्तद्गतमानसः । सहस्रं वासुदेवस्य नाम्नामेतत्प्रकीर्तयेत् ॥ ५॥

    "Being a devoted soul, rising early, and having a pure mind, one should chant these thousand names of Vasudeva (Lord Krishna)."

    यशः प्राप्नोति विपुलं ज्ञातिप्राधान्यमेव च । अचलां श्रियमाप्नोति श्रेयः प्राप्नोत्यनुत्तमम् ॥ ६॥

    By chanting these names, one attains great fame, preeminence in knowledge, steadfast prosperity, and ultimately, the highest good (supreme benefit).

    न भयं क्वचिदाप्नोति वीर्यं तेजश्च विन्दति । भवत्यरोगो द्युतिमान्बलरूपगुणान्वितः ॥ ७॥

    One does not encounter fear anywhere, acquires strength and brilliance, becomes free from ailments, and is endowed with power and virtues.

    रोगार्तो मुच्यते रोगाद्बद्धो मुच्येत बन्धनात् । भयान्मुच्येत भीतस्तु मुच्येतापन्न आपदः ॥ ८॥

    The one afflicted by illness is freed from illness, the one bound is released from bondage, the fearful are liberated from fear, and the one in distress is relieved from distress.

    दुर्गाण्यतितरत्याशु पुरुषः पुरुषोत्तमम् । स्तुवन्नामसहस्रेण नित्यं भक्तिसमन्वितः ॥ ९॥

    He who chants these holy thousand names, With devotion to Purushottama, Will cross the miseries, That cannot be crossed Without fail.

    वासुदेवाश्रयो मर्त्यो वासुदेवपरायणः । सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा याति ब्रह्म सनातनम् ॥ १०॥

    The man who nears Vasudeva, The man who takes Him as shelter, Would get rid of all sins, And become purer than the pure, And will reach Brahmam, Which existed forever.

    न वासुदेवभक्तानामशुभं विद्यते क्वचित् । जन्ममृत्युजराव्याधिभयं नैवोपजायते ॥ ११॥

    The devotees of Vasudeva the great, Never fall into days that are difficult, And never forever suffer, Of birth, death , old age and fear.

    इमं स्तवमधीयानः श्रद्धाभक्तिसमन्वितः । युज्येतात्मसुखक्षान्तिश्रीधृतिस्मृतिकीर्तिभिः ॥ १२॥

    He who sings these names with devotion, And with Bhakthi, Will get pleasure the great, Patience to allure, Wealth to attract, Bravery and memory to excel.

    न क्रोधो न च मात्सर्यं न लोभो नाशुभा मतिः । भवन्ति कृत पुण्यानां भक्तानां पुरुषोत्तमे ॥ १३॥

    The devotee of the Lord Purushottama, Has neither anger nor fear, Nor avarice, and nor bad thoughts.

    द्यौः सचन्द्रार्कनक्षत्रा खं दिशो भूर्महोदधिः । वासुदेवस्य वीर्येण विधृतानि महात्मनः ॥ १४॥

    All this world of Sun and stars, Moon and sky, Sea and the directions, Are but borne by valor the great, Of the great god Vasudeva.

  157. 157

    ससुरासुरगन्धर्वं सयक्षोरगराक्षसम् । जगद्वशे वर्ततेदं कृष्णस्य सचराचरम् ॥ १५॥

    All this world, Which moves and moves not, And which has devas, rakshasas, and Gandharvas, And also asuras and nagas, Is with Lord Krishna without fail.

  158. 158

    इन्द्रियाणि मनो बुद्धिः सत्त्वं तेजो बलं धृतिः । वासुदेवात्मकान्याहुः क्षेत्रं क्षेत्रज्ञ एव च ॥ १६॥

    The learned ones say, That all the limbs, Mind, wisdom, and thought, And also strength, bravery, body and the soul, Are full of Vasudeva.

    सर्वागमानामाचारः प्रथमं परिकल्प्यते । आचारप्रभवो धर्मो धर्मस्य प्रभुरच्युतः ॥ १७॥

    Rule of life was first born And from it came Dharma, And from it came Achyutha the Lord.

    ऋषयः पितरो देवा महाभूतानि धातवः । जङ्गमाजङ्गमं चेदं जगन्नारायणोद्भवम् ॥ १८॥

    All the sages, All the ancestors, All the devas, All the five elements, All the pleasures, All the luck, All that moves, All that does not move, All came only , From the great Narayana.

    योगो ज्ञानं तथा साङ्ख्यं विद्याः शिल्पादि कर्म च । वेदाः शास्त्राणि विज्ञानमेतत्सर्वं जनार्दनात् ॥ १९॥

    The Art of Yoga And the science of Sankhya. The treasure of knowledge. The divine art of sculpture . And all Vedas and sciences, All these came from Janardhana

  162. 162

    एको विष्णुर्महद्भूतं पृथग्भूतान्यनेकशः । त्रींल्लोकान्व्याप्य भूतात्मा भुङ्क्ते विश्वभुगव्ययः ॥ २०॥

    Vishnu is many , But He is one, And he divides himself, And exists in all beings, That is in three worlds, And rules all of them, Without death and decay.
