एवं प्रवृत्तस्य सदा भूतानां श्रेयसि द्विजाः । सर्वात्मकेनापि यदा नातुष्यद्धृदयं ततः ॥ १-४-२६ ॥
O twice-born brāhmaṇas, still his mind was not satisfied, although he engaged himself in working for the total welfare of all people. ॥ 1-4-26 ॥

हे द्विज ब्राह्मणो, यद्यपि वे समस्त लोगों के समग्र कल्याण कार्य में लगे रहे, तो भी उनका मन भरा नहीं। ॥ १-४-२६ ॥

Thus the sage, being dissatisfied at heart, at once began to reflect, because he knew the essence of religion, and he said within himself: ॥ 1-4-27 ॥

I have, under strict disciplinary vows, unpretentiously worshiped the Vedas, the spiritual masters and the altar of sacrifice. I have also abided by the rulings and have shown the import of disciplic succession through the explanation of the Mahābhārata, by which even women, śūdras and others [friends of the twice-born] can see the path of religion. ॥ 1-4-(28-29) ॥

मैंने कठिन व्रतों का पालन करते हुए वेदों की, गुरु की तथा यज्ञ वेदी की मिथ्याडम्बर के बिना पूजा की है। मैंने अनुशासन का भी पालन किया है और महाभारत की व्याख्या के माध्यम से शिष्य-परम्परा को अभिव्यक्ति दी है, जिससे स्त्रियाँ, शूद्र तथा अन्य (द्विजबन्धु) लोग भी धर्म के मार्ग का अवलोकन कर सकते हैं। ॥ १-४-(२८-२९) ॥
