एवं प्रवृत्तस्य सदा भूतानां श्रेयसि द्विजाः । सर्वात्मकेनापि यदा नातुष्यद्धृदयं ततः ।। १-४-२६ ।।

sanskrit

O twice-born brāhmaṇas, still his mind was not satisfied, although he engaged himself in working for the total welfare of all people. ।। 1-4-26 ।।

english translation

हे द्विज ब्राह्मणो, यद्यपि वे समस्त लोगों के समग्र कल्याण कार्य में लगे रहे, तो भी उनका मन भरा नहीं। ।। १-४-२६ ।।

नातिप्रसीदद्धृदयः सरस्वत्यास्तटे शुचौ । वितर्कयन् विविक्तस्थ इदं चोवाच धर्मवित् ।। १-४-२७ ।।

sanskrit

Thus the sage, being dissatisfied at heart, at once began to reflect, because he knew the essence of religion, and he said within himself: ।। 1-4-27 ।।

english translation

इस प्रकार मन में असंतुष्ट रहते हुए ऋषि ने तुरन्त विचार करना प्रारम्भ कर दिया, क्योंकि वे धर्म के सार के ज्ञाता और मन ही मन कहा : ।। १-४-२७ ।।

nAtiprasIdaddhRdayaH sarasvatyAstaTe zucau | vitarkayan viviktastha idaM covAca dharmavit || 1-4-27 ||

धृतव्रतेन हि मया छन्दांसि गुरवोऽग्नयः । मानिता निर्व्यलीकेन गृहीतं चानुशासनम् ।। १-४-२८ ।।

sanskrit

I have, under strict disciplinary vows, unpretentiously worshiped the Vedas, the spiritual masters and the altar of sacrifice. I have also abided by the rulings and have shown the import of disciplic succession through the explanation of the Mahābhārata, by which even women, śūdras and others [friends of the twice-born] can see the path of religion. ।। 1-4-(28-29) ।।

english translation

मैंने कठिन व्रतों का पालन करते हुए वेदों की, गुरु की तथा यज्ञ वेदी की मिथ्याडम्बर के बिना पूजा की है। मैंने अनुशासन का भी पालन किया है और महाभारत की व्याख्या के माध्यम से शिष्य-परम्परा को अभिव्यक्ति दी है, जिससे स्त्रियाँ, शूद्र तथा अन्य (द्विजबन्धु) लोग भी धर्म के मार्ग का अवलोकन कर सकते हैं। ।। १-४-(२८-२९) ।।

I am feeling incomplete, though I myself am fully equipped with everything required by the Vedas. ।। 1-4-30 ।।

english translation

वेदों के लिए जितनी बातों की आवश्यकता है, यद्यपि मैं उनसे पूर्णरूप से सज्जित हूँ, तथापि मैं अपूर्णता का अनुभव कर रहा हूँ। ।। १-४-३० ।।
