तस्मात्त्वत्तो महीमीषद्वृणेऽहं वरदर्षभात् । पदानि त्रीणि दैत्येन्द्र सम्मितानि पदा मम ॥ ८-१९-१६ ॥
O King of the Daityas, from Your Majesty, who come from such a noble family and who are able to give charity munificently, I ask only three paces of land, to the measurement of My steps. ॥ 8-19-16 ॥

हे दैत्यराज! ऐसे कुलीन एवं मुक्तहस्त दान देने वाले आपसे मैं अपने पैरों से मापकर केवल तीन पग भूमि की याचना करता हूँ। ॥ ८-१९-१६ ॥

नान्यत्ते कामये राजन् वदान्याज्जगदीश्वरात् । नैनः प्राप्नोति वै विद्वान् यावदर्थप्रतिग्रहः ॥ ८-१९-१७ ॥
O King, controller of the entire universe, although you are very munificent and are able to give Me as much land as I want, I do not want anything from you that is unnecessary. If a learned brāhmaṇa takes charity from others only according to his needs, he does not become entangled in sinful activities. ॥ 8-19-17 ॥

हे समग्र ब्रह्माण्ड के नियामक राजा! यद्यपि आप अत्यन्त उदार हैं और जितनी भूमि चाहूँ मुझे दे सकते हैं, किन्तु मैं आपसे अनावश्यक वस्तु नहीं माँगना चाहता। यदि कोई विद्वान ब्राह्मण अन्यों से अपनी आवश्यकतानुसार दान लेता है, तो वह पापपूर्ण कर्मों में नहीं फँसता। ॥ ८-१९-१७ ॥

बलिरुवाच अहो ब्राह्मणदायाद वाचस्ते वृद्धसम्मताः । त्वं बालो बालिशमतिः स्वार्थं प्रत्यबुधो यथा ॥ ८-१९-१८ ॥
Bali Mahārāja said: O son of a brāhmaṇa, Your instructions are as good as those of learned and elderly persons. Nonetheless, You are a boy, and Your intelligence is insufficient. Thus You are not very prudent in regard to Your self-interest. ॥ 8-19-18 ॥

बलि महाराज ने कहा : हे ब्राह्मण पुत्र! तुम्हारे उपदेश विद्वान तथा वयोवृद्ध पुरुषों जैसे हैं। तो भी अभी तुम बालक हो और तुम्हारी बुद्धि अल्प है। अतएव तुम्हें अपने हित का पूरी तरह ज्ञान नहीं है। ॥ ८-१९-१८ ॥

मां वचोभिः समाराध्य लोकानामेकमीश्वरम् । पदत्रयं वृणीते योऽबुद्धिमान् द्वीपदाशुषम् ॥ ८-१९-१९ ॥
I am able to give You an entire island because I am the proprietor of the three divisions of the universe. You have come to take something from me and have pleased me by Your sweet words, but You are asking only three paces of land. Therefore You are not very intelligent. ॥ 8-19-19 ॥

मैं तुम्हें समूचा द्वीप दे सकता हूँ क्योंकि मैं ब्रह्माण्ड के तीनों विभागों का स्वामी हूँ। तुम मुझसे कुछ लेने आये हो और तुमने मुझे अपने मधुर वचनों से सन्तुष्ट किया है, किन्तु तुम केवल तीन पग भूमि माँग रहे हो अतएव तुम मुझे अधिक बुद्धिमान् नहीं लगते हो। ॥ ८-१९-१९ ॥

न पुमान् मामुपव्रज्य भूयो याचितुमर्हति । तस्माद्वृत्तिकरीं भूमिं वटो कामं प्रतीच्छ मे ॥ ८-१९-२० ॥
O small boy, one who approaches me to beg something should not have to ask anything more, anywhere. Therefore, if You wish, You may ask from me as much land as will suffice to maintain You according to Your needs. ॥ 8-19-20 ॥
english translation
हे बालक! जो एक बार कुछ माँगने के लिए मेरे पास आता है उसे अन्यत्र कुछ भी माँगने की आवश्यकता नहीं रहनी चाहिए। अतएव, चाहो तो तुम मुझसे उतनी भूमि माँग सकते हो जितने से तुम्हारी जीवन-यापन संबंधी आवश्यकता पूरी हो सके। ॥ ८-१९-२० ॥
