श्रीभगवानुवाच वनं विविक्षुः पुत्रेषु भार्यां न्यस्य सहैव वा । वन एव वसेच्छान्तस्तृतीयं भागमायुषः ॥ ११-१८-१ ॥
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: One who desires to adopt the third order of life, vānaprastha, should enter the forest with a peaceful mind, leaving his wife with his mature sons, or else taking her along with him. ॥ 11-18-1 ॥

भगवान के परम व्यक्तित्व ने कहा: जो व्यक्ति जीवन के तीसरे क्रम, वानप्रस्थ को अपनाने की इच्छा रखता है, उसे शांतिपूर्ण मन से, अपनी पत्नी को अपने परिपक्व बेटों के साथ छोड़कर, या फिर उसे अपने साथ ले जाना चाहिए, जंगल में प्रवेश करना चाहिए। ॥ ११-१८-१ ॥

कन्दमूलफलैर्वन्यैर्मेध्यैर्वृत्तिं प्रकल्पयेत् । वसीत वल्कलं वासस्तृणपर्णाजिनानि च ॥ ११-१८-२ ॥
Having adopted the vānaprastha order of life, one should arrange one’s sustenance by eating uncontaminated bulbs, roots and fruits that grow in the forest. One may dress oneself with tree bark, grass, leaves or animal skins. ॥ 11-18-2 ॥

जीवन के वानप्रस्थ क्रम को अपनाने के बाद, व्यक्ति को जंगल में उगने वाले असंदूषित बल्ब, जड़ें और फल खाकर अपने जीविका की व्यवस्था करनी चाहिए। कोई अपने आप को पेड़ की छाल, घास, पत्तियां या जानवरों की खाल से सजा सकता है। ॥ ११-१८-२ ॥

केशरोमनखश्मश्रुमलानि बिभृयाद्दतः । न धावेदप्सु मज्जेत त्रिकालं स्थण्डिलेशयः ॥ ११-१८-३ ॥
The vānaprastha should not groom the hair on his head, body or face, should not manicure his nails, should not pass stool and urine at irregular times and should not make a special endeavor for dental hygiene. He should be content to take bath in water three times daily and should sleep on the ground. ॥ 11-18-3 ॥

वानप्रस्थ को अपने सिर, शरीर या चेहरे पर बाल नहीं संवारने चाहिए, अपने नाखूनों को साफ नहीं करना चाहिए, अनियमित समय पर मल और मूत्र त्याग नहीं करना चाहिए और दंत स्वच्छता के लिए विशेष प्रयास नहीं करना चाहिए। उसे प्रतिदिन तीन बार पानी से स्नान करके संतुष्ट रहना चाहिए और जमीन पर सोना चाहिए। ॥ ११-१८-३ ॥

ग्रीष्मे तप्येत पञ्चाग्नीन् वर्षास्वासारषाड्जले । आकण्ठमग्नः शिशिर एवं वृत्तस्तपश्चरेत् ॥ ११-१८-४ ॥
Thus engaged as a vānaprastha, one should execute penance during the hottest summer days by subjecting oneself to burning fires on four sides and the blazing sun overhead; during the rainy season one should remain outside, subjecting oneself to torrents of rain; and in the freezing winter one should remain submerged in water up to one’s neck. ॥ 11-18-4 ॥

इस प्रकार वानप्रस्थ के रूप में संलग्न होकर, व्यक्ति को सबसे गर्म गर्मी के दिनों में चारों तरफ जलती हुई आग और सिर पर चमकते सूरज के अधीन रहकर तपस्या करनी चाहिए; बरसात के मौसम में व्यक्ति को बाहर रहना चाहिए, अपने आप को मूसलाधार बारिश के अधीन रखते हुए; और कड़ाके की सर्दी में व्यक्ति को गर्दन तक पानी में डूबा रहना चाहिए। ॥ ११-१८-४ ॥

अग्निपक्वं समश्नीयात्कालपक्वमथापि वा । उलूखलाश्मकुट्टो वा दन्तोलूखल एव वा ॥ ११-१८-५ ॥
One may eat foodstuffs prepared with fire, such as grains, or fruits ripened by time. One may grind one’s food with mortar and stone or with one’s own teeth. ॥ 11-18-5 ॥
