धर्मपालो नरपतिः स तु सम्राट्बृहच्छ्रवाः । साक्षान्महाभागवतो राजर्षिर्हयमेधयाट् । क्षुत्तृट् श्रमयुतो दीनो नैवास्मच्छापमर्हति ।। १-१८-४६ ।।

sanskrit

The Emperor Parīkṣit is a pious king. He is highly celebrated and is a first-class devotee of the Personality of Godhead. He is a saint amongst royalty, and he has performed many horse sacrifices. When such a king is tired and fatigued, being stricken with hunger and thirst, he does not at all deserve to be cursed. ।। 1-18-46 ।।

english translation

सम्राट परीक्षित एक पवित्र राजा हैं। वे अत्यन्त प्रसिद्ध हैं और उच्चकोटि के भगवद्भक्त हैं। वे राजाओं में सन्त (राजर्षि) हैं और उन्होंने अनेक अश्वमेध यज्ञ किये हैं। जब ऐसा राजा, भूख तथा प्यास का मारा, थका-हारा होता है, तो वह किसी भी तरह से शाप दिये जाने के योग्य नहीं होता। ।। १-१८-४६ ।।

अपापेषु स्वभृत्येषु बालेनापक्वबुद्धिना । पापं कृतं तद्भगवान् सर्वात्मा क्षन्तुमर्हति ।। १-१८-४७ ।।

sanskrit

Then the ṛṣi prayed to the all-pervading Personality of Godhead to pardon his immature boy, who had no intelligence and who committed the great sin of cursing a person who was completely free from all sins, who was subordinate and who deserved to be protected. ।। 1-18-47 ।।

english translation

तब ऋषि ने सर्वव्यापी भगवान् से अपने अप्रौढ़ तथा बुद्धिहीन पुत्र को क्षमा करने के लिए प्रार्थना की, जिसने ऐसे व्यक्ति को शाप देने का महान् पाप किया था, जो समस्त पापों से मुक्त था और पराश्रित एवं सभी प्रकार से रक्षा किये जाने के योग्य था। ।। १-१८-४७ ।।

तिरस्कृता विप्रलब्धाः शप्ताः क्षिप्ता हता अपि । नास्य तत्प्रतिकुर्वन्ति तद्भक्ताः प्रभवोऽपि हि ।। १-१८-४८ ।।

sanskrit

The devotees of the Lord are so forbearing that even though they are defamed, cheated, cursed, disturbed, neglected or even killed, they are never inclined to avenge themselves. ।। 1-18-48 ।।

english translation

भगवान् के भक्त इतने सहिष्णु होते हैं कि अपमानित होने, ठगे जाने, शापित होने, विचलित किये जाने, उपेक्षित होने अथवा जान से मारे जाने पर भी कभी बदला लेने का विचार नहीं करते। ।। १-१८-४८ ।।

tiraskRtA vipralabdhAH zaptAH kSiptA hatA api | nAsya tatpratikurvanti tadbhaktAH prabhavo'pi hi || 1-18-48 ||

The sage thus regretted the sin committed by his own son. He did not take the insult paid by the King very seriously. ।। 1-18-49 ।।

english translation

इस प्रकार मुनि ने अपने पुत्र द्वारा किये गये पाप के लिए पश्चात्ताप किया। उसने राजा द्वारा किये गये अपमान को गम्भीरता से ग्रहण नहीं किया। ।। १-१८-४९ ।।

प्रायशः साधवो लोके परैर्द्वन्द्वेषु योजिताः । न व्यथन्ति न हृष्यन्ति यत आत्मागुणाश्रयः ।। १-१८-५० ।।

sanskrit

Generally the transcendentalists, even though engaged by others in the dualities of the material world, are not distressed. Nor do they take pleasure [in worldly things], for they are transcendentally engaged. ।। 1-18-50 ।।

english translation

सामान्यतया अध्यात्मवादी अन्यों द्वारा संसार के द्वन्द्वों में लगाये जाने पर भी व्यथित नहीं होते। न ही वे (सांसारिक वस्तुओं में) आनन्द लेते हैं, क्योंकि वे अध्यात्म में लगे रहते हैं। ।। १-१८-५० ।।
