स्वलङ्कृतं श्यामतुरङ्गयोजितं रथं मृगेन्द्रध्वजमाश्रितः पुरात् । वृतो रथाश्वद्विपपत्तियुक्तया स्वसेनया दिग्विजयाय निर्गतः ।। १-१६-११ ।।

sanskrit

Mahārāja Parīkṣit sat on a chariot drawn by black horses. His flag was marked with the sign of a lion. Being so decorated and surrounded by charioteers, cavalry, elephants and infantry soldiers, he left the capital to conquer in all directions. ।। 1-16-11 ।।

english translation

महाराज परीक्षित काले घोड़ों द्वारा खींचे जानेवाले रथ पर सवार हो गये। उनकी ध्वजा पर सिंह का चिन्ह अंकित था। इस प्रकार सुसज्जित होकर तथा सारथियों, अश्वारोहियों, हाथीयों तथा पैदल सैनिकों से घिरे हुए, उन्होंने सभी दिशाएँ जीतने के लिए राजधानी से प्रस्थान किया। ।। १-१६-११ ।।

भद्राश्वं केतुमालं च भारतं चोत्तरान् कुरून् । किम्पुरुषादीनि वर्षाणि विजित्य जगृहे बलिम् ।। १-१६-१२ ।।

sanskrit

Mahārāja Parīkṣit then conquered all parts of the earthly planet — Bhadrāśva, Ketumāla, Bhārata, the northern Kuru, Kimpuruṣa, etc. — and exacted tributes from their respective rulers. ।। 1-16-12 ।।

english translation

तब महाराज परीक्षित ने पृथ्वी-लोक के समस्त भागों—भद्राश्व, केतुमाल, भारत, कुरुजांगल का उत्तरी भाग, किम्पुरुष इत्यादि को जीत लिया और उनके शासकों से भेंटें वसूल कीं। ।। १-१६-१२ ।।

तत्र तत्रोपश‍ृण्वानः स्वपूर्वेषां महात्मनाम् । प्रगीयमाणं च यशः कृष्णमाहात्म्यसूचकम् ।। १-१६-१३ ।।

sanskrit

Wherever the King visited, he continuously heard the glories of his great forefathers, who were all devotees of the Lord, and also of the glorious acts of Lord Kṛṣṇa. ।। 1-16-13 ।।

english translation

राजा जहाँ कहीं भी जाते, उन्हें निरन्तर अपने उन महान् पूर्वजों का यशोगान सुनने मिलता, जो सभी भगवद्भक्त थे, तथा भगवान् श्रीकृष्ण के यशस्वी कार्यों की गाथा सुनने को भी मिलती। ।। १-१६-१३ ।।

आत्मानं च परित्रातमश्वत्थाम्नोऽस्त्रतेजसः । स्नेहं च वृष्णिपार्थानां तेषां भक्तिं च केशवे ।। १-१६-१४ ।।

sanskrit

He also heard how he himself had been protected by the Lord from the powerful heat of the weapon of Aśvatthāmā. People also mentioned the great affection between the descendants of Vṛṣṇi and Pṛthā due to the latter’s great devotion to Lord Keśava. ।। 1-16-14 ।।

english translation

वे यह भी सुनते कि किस तरह वे स्वयं अश्वत्थामा के ब्रह्मास्त्र के प्रचण्ड ताप से भगवान् कृष्ण द्वारा बचाये गये थे। लोग वृष्णि तथा पृथा-वंशियों के मध्य अत्यधिक स्नेह का भी उल्लेख करते, क्योंकि पृथा भगवान् केशव के प्रति अत्यधिक श्रद्धावान थी। ।। १-१६-१४ ।।

तेभ्यः परमसन्तुष्टः प्रीत्युज्जृम्भितलोचनः । महाधनानि वासांसि ददौ हारान् महामनाः ।। १-१६-१५ ।।

sanskrit

The King, being very pleased with the singers of such glories, opened his eyes in great satisfaction. Out of magnanimity he was pleased to award them very valuable necklaces and clothing. ।। 1-16-15 ।।

english translation

राजा ने ऐसे यशोगान करनेवालों से अत्यधिक प्रसन्न होकर परम सन्तोष के साथ अपनी आँखें खोलीं। उदारतावश उन्होंने प्रसन्न होकर उन्हें मूल्यवान मालाएँ तथा वस्त्र भेंट किये। ।। १-१६-१५ ।।
