प्रगृह्य च महीपालो जलपूरितमञ्जलिम् | दिशं याम्यामभिमुखो रुदन्वचनमब्रवीत् || २-१०२-२६

Rama, the ruler of the earth, held water with both palms cupped and, facing the south, the direction of Yama (the god of death) said these words, sobbing : - [1-102-26]

एतत्ते राजशार्दूल विमलं तोयमक्षयम् | पितृलोकगत स्याद्य मद्दत्तमुपतिष्ठतु || २-१०२-२७

- 'Oh ! best of kings, you are gone to the world of the manes, and let this inexhaustible libation of pure water reach you'. [2-102-27]

etatte rAjazArdUla vimalaM toyamakSayam | pitRlokagata syAdya maddattamupatiSThatu || 2-102-27

ततो मन्दाकिनीतीरात्प्रत्युत्तीर्य स राघवः | पितुश्चकार तेजस्वी निर्वापं भ्रातृभिः सह || २-१०२-२८

Then, the powerful scion of the Raghu race reached bank, from the bathing spot of the river Mandakini along with his brothers and offered pinda (an offering of rice flour to the departed) to his late lamented father. [2-102-28]

Placing the balls of ingudi pulp mixed with badari fruit on a spread of darbha grass, Rama, was overcome with grief and weeping, said : - [2-102-29]

- 'Oh ! great king, we offer you such food as we partake now. Be pleased to accept it. For, his gods are offered the food a man takes.' [2-102-30]
