    श्रुत्वा वस्तु समग्रं तद्धर्मात्मा धर्मसंहितम् | व्यक्तमन्वेषते भूयो यद् वृत्तं तस्य धीमतः || १-३-१

    Hearing the entire story of Rama from the intellecual Narada, the righteous (Valmiki) sought to know clearly more about the history of Rama endowed with wisdom. [1-3-1]

    उपस्पृश्योदकं सम्यक् मुनिः स्थित्वा कृताञ्जलिः | प्राचीनाग्रेषु दर्भेषु धर्मेणान्वेषते गतिम् || १-३-२

    Valmiki sitting on a sacred grass mat, whose apices are towards east, touched waters, and made his palms adjoined in reverence, and then by his yogic insight started to search comprehensively, for the narrative course of Ramayana. [1-3-2]

    रामलक्ष्मणसीताभी राज्ञा दशरथेन च | सभार्येण सराष्ट्रेण यत्प्राप्तं तत्र तत्त्वतः || १-३-३

    By the power of his penance, the holy sage visualised clearly Rama, Lakshmana and Sita, king Dasaratha, his wives and his kingdom and all that they had observed,..... - [1-3-3]

    हसितं भाषितं चैव गतिर्या यच्च चेष्टितम् | तत्सर्वं धर्मवीर्येण यथावत्सम्प्रपश्यति || १-३-४

    - experienced, endeavoured during the course of events. He also visualised clearly their laughter and conversation exactly as in real life. [1-3-4]

    स्त्रीतृतीयेन च तथा यत्प्राप्तं चरता वने | सत्यसंधेन रामेण तत्सर्वं चान्ववेक्षितम् || १-३-५

    All that was acquired by truthful Rama, Lakshmana and wife Sita as the third person when they were moving in the Dandakaranya forest, was visualised. [1-3-5]
