    सागरानूपजे देशे बहुमूलफलोदके | चितां कृत्वा प्रवेक्ष्यामि समिद्धमरणीसुतम् || ५-१३-४१

    उपविष्टस्य वा सम्यग्लिङ्गिनीं साधयिष्यतः | शरीरं भक्षयिष्यन्ति वायसाः श्वापदानि च || ५-१३-४२

    - so that sea waves wash off the ashes or crows and beasts will eat up my body while I sit fasting unto death. [5-13-42]

    इदं महर्षिभिर्दृष्टं निर्याणमिति मे मतिः | सम्यगापः प्रवेक्ष्यामि न चेत्पश्यामि जानकीम् || ५-१३-४३

    'I shall enter water and drown myself to death if I am not able to find Janaki. I think this way of ending life has been suggested by great ascetics. [5-13-43]

    सुजातमूला सुभगा कीर्तिमाला यशस्विनी | प्रभग्ना चिररात्रीयं मम सीतामपश्यतः || ५-१३-४४

    'My glory which had a good start (in the form of bringing Rama to Sugriva) and brought fortune to Sugriva and fame to me has been snapped as I could not find Sita. [5-13-44]

    तापसो वा भविष्यामि नियतो वृक्षमूलिकः | नेतः प्रतिगमिष्यामि तामदृष्ट्वासितेक्षणाम् || ५-१३-४५

    'I will remain an ascetic and do penance under the tree practising selfcontrol and not go back without seeing the black-eyed Sita. [5-13-45]
